PPLT Holds Toad Class for Homeschoolers

Bill Brooks taught a lesson to the homeschool kids and their moms on January 28 about amphibians, emphasizing the Houston Toad. The inside lesson lasted an hour and a half with about 20 minutes of crafts, including a really cute toad mask and a toad life cycle circle thingy you can spin to reveal all the phases of the toad from egg to adult. All these were colored. Scissors, glue, tape, construction paper, and lots of fun creative messy stuff was involved, all of which the kids cleaned up in about 3 minutes.

After the inside lesson we drove to an active toad pond off Harmon Rd. in Bastrop State Park. That only took about 6 minutes. Bill and I timed it on Monday. We had some more instruction about the toad's breeding habits and life cycle and what kind of ponds they prefer etc.

Class was finished at 12:00 noon. 20 children from 3 to 14 participated. There were 11 Mom teachers, so there were 31 participants. Four Master Naturalists participated. It was a great day.
